View the latest post Fall 2010 Campout.... Oct, 1-3, Maple Springs, Mammoth Cave

OK, let's get something on the calendar.

Dates:

I'm suggessting, Sep 24.25.26 or Oct 1.2,3. I don't think those conflict with Appleseed and I know that Knob Creek is the weekend of Oct 9th. I know that the weekend of Oct 1,2,3 is a big weekend of festivals in Louisville, but I don't know if that matters to any of us. So pick the date that's best, or pick either, and I'll start calling around on campsites.

Location

I've asked Hillbilly and Shawdow61 for some suggested locations. I'm...

View the latest post 18th Century Refrigeration, with a 20th Century addition

I remember asking my grandmother how the keep perishables fresh, without refrigerators. Her answer was interesting (this was over 10 years ago, I asked), she said they canned a lot of meat and used holes in the ground.

Refrigeration is a very useful tool, one which enables out current food lifestyle. It is an items which we could easily lose with loss of electricity.

Here are some of the items which I have stumbled across over the years, and would implement different aspects of...

View the latest post Minute of Angle, MOA Brief explanation

Hey All,

One of the fun things to teach is Minute of Angle, MOA, since it is quite simple, but really misunderstood.

It is easier to do this in person, with drawing pictures to help folks visualize it, but I will try to paint some word pictures. After the explanation, I will tell you why you should know this stuff and how it is used.

We all know that a circle has 360 degrees in it. Take a piece of paper and draw a 90 deg angle on it. Something like what is below.

View the latest post Multi-Scenario First aid Kits

Thanks Bunker for this suggestion...I hope it is helpful.

Below is a list of possible items to include in your first aid kit for 3 different scenarios. While this list is far from perfect and won’t be appropriate for all families, it is a starting point. Please feel free to add on items that you feel would be appropriate. I won’t go into the med’s that you would need as those are individual items..but remember to keep your prescriptions filled and try to have extra eye glasses/contacts...

View the latest post Homemade Natural Deoderant

Okay, yes, I am spending a little too much time "surfin" but I think I'm findin' some good info and want to share with my fellow preppers. This recipe comes form a website called PASSIONATE HOMEMAKING.

5-6 Tbsp coconut oil
1/4 cup baking soda
1/4 cup arrowroot or cornstarch

Combine soda and arrowroot(or cornstarch), then slowly add coconut oil and work it with a spoon until it maintains the substance you desire. It should be about the same texture as the store-bought...

View the latest post Attachment(s) Alternative Power Options #2

Here is part 2 of the Alternative Power Options that I spoke of last post.
The 1st post drew a fair amount inquiries as well as replies that generated really good follow up support.

On this post we will go over 2 types of solar chargers that are easy to get and of course 2 of the 4 charger models are at Harbor Freight but Wal-Mart and Sears has them too.

Now for this product test I have done something different than the normal obvious means of using them, this is what happens when your...

View the latest post Attachment(s) Review: Mayday Emergency Food Rations

i guess i'll go ahead and post my review of the Mayday Emergency Food Bars (2400 calories version)...

i just recently purchased three packages ($4.99 each). A little pricier than the Mainstay Bars, but i wanted to try something different.....

They are rated to withstand temperatures between -22 to 149 degrees F and have a 5 year shelf life (the ones that i bought were made in Feb 2010). They are also marketed as "non-thirst provoking." They do have a higher protein...

View the latest post Attachment(s) Brutus 9000 dehydrator

Found my little Ronco Dehydrator in the garage a few weeks ago. We dehydrated a fresh pineapple and a can of pineapples. I like the fresh BunkerMama likes the canned best.

That aside it, and you all, inspired me to build a dehydrator. I've wanted to do this for 30 years. Especially to set it up to be solar at a later date. The hardest part of doing the dehydrator is the material for the trays. I found barbeque grills on clearance for $5.99 at Home Depot and bought 6 of them. You...

Well as I promised, I am going to start a post about alternative ways to power things in our life should grid go down by weather related issues or dare I say it…. Man made disasters.

This is gonna be a few posts so bear with me as I stumble to convey my thoughts on how you can do this without spending thousands of dollars and still be able to maintain some sort of normalcy in a not to normal situation.

This past weekend my bride Sunshine and I went on a bit of spending spree...

View the latest post Canned Ham Review

I wanted to put out a quick review on 2 products that I have tried this week. Both products are the small "canned" hams found at Family Dollar and Dollar General stores. One is Bristol brand and the other is Royale, both packaged in the little metal container, both 16 ounces, pre-cooked or can be re-heated and glazed for you appetite enjoyment. Cost for either of these was $2.50, both were very good, easy open packaging, stacks well and a decent exp. date. The ones I bought both were approx....
